
Why IQ tests measure several domains
Performance across reasoning tasks correlates: people who do well on one tend to do well on others. That shared variance is what a general score summarises. But the correlations are far from perfect, which means the average conceals real differences in profile.
Sampling several domains serves two purposes. It makes the overall score more stable, because a bad run on one item type is diluted. And it produces a breakdown, which is the part that supports decisions about how to study, practise or work.
1. Logical reasoning
Logical reasoning is the ability to derive valid conclusions from stated rules. Items present conditionals, orderings, syllogisms and constraint puzzles where every element needed for the answer is on screen and the work is entirely in deriving it.
Strong logical reasoning shows up as reliability under complexity: long chains of inference stay correct. Weakness usually shows as premature conclusions — accepting a plausible answer before checking whether it satisfies every constraint. Practice with formal puzzles genuinely helps here, more than in most domains.
2. Pattern recognition
Pattern recognition is the detection of structure in sequences and matrices. Progressive matrix items are the classic form: a grid of figures changes along one or more hidden dimensions, and one cell is missing.
This domain is closest to what psychometricians call fluid reasoning, because it depends least on prior knowledge. Strength appears as quickly finding the governing rule rather than testing options one by one. Weakness often reflects strategy rather than capacity: scanning a matrix without a system means noticing local changes and missing the global rule.
3. Spatial reasoning
Spatial reasoning covers mental rotation, folding, cross-sections and comparison of shapes. Items ask which three-dimensional object a flat net produces, which figure is the same object viewed from another angle, or how a stack of blocks looks from above.
It is the domain with the widest range of self-reported difficulty and the one that responds most visibly to practice, largely because people who avoid spatial tasks never build the habits — fixing a reference point, rotating in steps — that make them tractable. Strength here often accompanies aptitude for engineering, design, surgery and navigation.
4. Numerical ability
Numerical ability, in a reasoning test, means reasoning about quantity rather than performing arithmetic. Items involve proportion, rate, relative magnitude and number series. Calculation is deliberately kept light so the difficulty lies in seeing the relationship, not in long division.
Weak numerical results frequently reflect maths anxiety rather than reasoning limits: the same person handles equivalent logic problems well once the numbers are replaced by symbols. If your breakdown shows a gap here alongside solid logical reasoning, that pattern is worth considering.
5. Working memory
Working memory is the capacity to hold information in mind and manipulate it at the same time. Items require keeping several intermediate results available while continuing to reason — tracking positions, reversing sequences, applying successive transformations.
It is the domain most sensitive to state. Sleep loss, stress, illness and interruptions hit working memory before they hit anything else, which is why a low result here in a poorly timed sitting deserves a retake rather than a conclusion. Externalising intermediate steps on paper is the single most effective compensation strategy.
How to read your own domain profile
Compare each domain against your own average rather than against 100. A profile that is uniformly high with one domain trailing tells a different story than a flat profile, even if the totals match.
